Not Half is the studio project of Allan Conroy, who formed the band in the ‘80s in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Easily some of the most irritating and unpleasant music around, Not Half’s latest is the ass-clenchingly bad C-Division.

C-Division begins with a minute-and-a-half of banging pots and pans with Conroy idiotically chanting the album’s title over and over and over. It doesn’t get any worse or better from here on out. Filled with samples, sound bites, and a great deal of drum & bass instrumentation, C-Division is an incredibly random mishmash of aimless noise, beats, and slaphappy synth lines. This feels more like a schizophrenic patient’s therapy hour than it does a collection of music.

Smartly enough, D-Trash and Not Half decided to release this album as a free download. One can only surmise that the parties involved were intelligent enough to understand that probably no one would want to pay for this. Also, “Chronoton1.1” features a reiteration of the metal pot banging that comprised such a prominent feature of the album’s title track, just in case you didn’t comprehend the deep and mesmerizing symbolism the first time.

Last year at Neutral we saw a resounding array of works from an eclectic variety of painters, musicians, video installations, fashion designers and the best part was that a lot of works were from local artists who just brought their stuff to the venue. The same will go for this year in that the venue is open to any/all artists to bring/show/perform/sell their work as long as they contact shane.burrow@hotmail.com. This years venue is way sicker, the artists/musicians are wayyy better, and we have a whole slew of incredible ideas to make this one blow last years Let There Be Art out of the water. BDZ interviewed Junkie Kut and Splatterkore Reck-ords last year. Now it’s time to take a look at Junkie Kut’s latest release Terror, Rage & Liberty, which was released in collaboration with D-Trash Records and Splatterkore. The release itself has already been out for nearly half a year as a free web release. A limited edition CDr version with a bonus track was released this year. The CD comes with some nice artwork, 2 Junkie Kut badges and a guitar pick.

Terror, Rage & Liberty is a story situated in a perhaps not so distant future where society has consumed itself. A terrorist group called Planetary Peace Protocol destroys all electronics on earth with the use of an electromagnetic weapon in order to bring the current capitalist system down and plans to create a primitive dictatorship. An opposing group of humans and machines rebel against these schemes and try to bring the new world order down. This sounds very much like the conspiracy theories that are going on now, but the story is not a direct copy of them. More like a combination of ideas such as NWO conspiracies (secret societies behind governments striving for more control using false flag attacks), the Zeitgeist Movement (machines and humans working together for a more balanced society), cyberpunk fiction and of course the underground tekno movement. You can read more about the background story here.

Junkie Kut’s usual style is a combination of distorted vocals, energetic speedcore beats with marching percussion, heavy guitar riffs, acid lines and peaceful ambient pads and choirs. The track structures are non-formulaic, constantly evolving and not leaving room for boredom. All the tracks, except the interlude and Land of the Cyborgs, use these elements more or less, yet in an original way. One of the genres mentioned on D-Trash’s site is digital hardcore, but this is even more hardcore than the usual digital hardcore bands, maybe the term “speedcore punk” makes more sense. The intro track starts with a war alarm siren, sounds of chaos and an introduction speech by Stelldogs. After the intro ambience the distorted bassdrums, guitars and vocals kick in with power. The first 2 tracks are more focused on guitar and aggression, but the third track, The Silent Majority, starts with some uplifting choir pads. After 3 minutes of speedcore the beats come to a halt, acid lines come in and the track becomes even more epic. The 4th track Chaostika, named after the Splatterkore symbol, is again more aggressive in style. The bassdrum distortion and guitar distortion sound like they merge together. After this there is a dark ambient/breaks interlude with a speech by Alex B. The next tracks follow the usual concept, except track 7 which is a short hardcore punk interlude/track. The title track starts with a mashup of Prodigy’s No Good (Start The Dance) before turning into despairful piano melodies and energetic beats. In conclusion the bonus track Anthropological CO2 Conspiracy is based on a more present day topic, the climate change hoax. Good intentions may not always be what they claim to be.

Although “story” releases are not so uncommon in core, most of the releases leave interpretation of the story to the listener by only providing track titles and sounds to the imagination. In this aspect Terror, Rage & Liberty delivers more depth through the use of a background story and lyrics. Hopefully this will be an inspiration to other core artists as well. Only minus I found in this release was that, intentional or not, the speeches in some tracks and interludes sound blurry making it more difficult to follow the story. Being tired of most of present day speedcore this release was really a positive surprise for me. A release that can still give goose bumps after multiple listens is something that doesn’t come accross very often. My favorite tracks on the release were definitely 3 and 8. Junkie Kut’s best work so far.. I’m looking forward to experience these tracks performed live!

Hailing from Ireland the Drugzilla throw out this pulse racing collection that is not for those of a nervous disposition.

Almost impossible to corner this is a scatter shooting of disorientating glitches, pounding Speedcore rhythms and obscure samples, feeling like machine gun fire through the ears- and is almost as damaging.

Picking out individual tracks is almost impossible amongst the madness, despite christening them with such unforgettable titles as Buckfast Get You Fucked Fast, Drugzilla Will Lower Your Sperm Count, and Organs Can Be Replaced, Sessions Can’t Be Missed.

There’s barely a second to catch your breath during the albums 50 minute duration, sandblasting complacency clean away with the subtly of a natural disaster.

Already big on the European Speedcore and extreme electronic stages this album is a chaotic listen to say the least, but those with sky scraping extreme music thresholds will devour this.

DRUGZILLA - Siamese Beashts (D-TRASH Records/Human Jigsaw Records)

Does anyone remember Bile? Not the goregrind band, but the extreme gabba electronics outfit that were around a while back. I remember picking up one of their albums, accidently because I thought it was the aforementioned goregrind band, and been totally blown away by the contents. Well as extreme as they were, it’s nothing compared to Drugzilla’s latest offering: Siamese Beashts.

You regularly read in reviews “the soundtrack to the end of the world” but this could actually be it. Clearly coming from the same train of thought as Anaal Nathrakh, probably why their touring with them in May, this is the ultimate in aural terror, filled with black humour, social disgust and a drum machine set so fast it would make Scott Hull rethink his entire career.

There is absolutely no let up here, as even when the tracks slow down, the eerie sense that they’re building towards something more extreme than what came before is always there, and normally you’re right on the money with it. It’s the marmite of extreme albums, where you will either love it or hate it, you’ll never find a casual Drugzilla listener unless they’re in a coma or dead.

And even though the song titles point to a rather tongue in cheek approach (Swine Flu is Joke Flu) it’s merely a ruse to draw you into the apocalyptic world within. I cannot think of an album that has kept me so on my toes or pushed me so close to my limits. This is the ultimate in extremity and what makes it even better is that it still remains an entertaining and coherent album, with each track standing out from the last, and one that somehow keeps your interest despite been 14 tracks long.

Terrifying, but satisfyingly so.

For those who seek something out of the ordinary, look into DK Dance. This female fronted punk industrial band from France deliver hard, yet catchy tracks with their latest album 'Smells Like Riot.' Entirely in French for the most part, these femme fatales attack with vicious lyrics and guitars layered in dance in beats that would make Lady GaGa proud... even though the two bands are nothing alike. The album opens with "Un Trop Bis," which almost has a middle eastern feel to the way the instruments are played. Combined with the backing beats, it makes a great way to hook the audience before the punk influence comes in. "La Plafond..." relies more on rhythmic chugging guitars, raw in sound but not too much distortion. The vocals may take some getting used to because they sound like an angry teenage girl screaming obscure obscenities at the audience, but there is a few 'seasoned' roars in there too for fans to enjoy. The vocals aren't bad, per say, just unexpected.

Throughout the album, things tend to switch back and forth. Some tracks like "Nevrologie" and "Jogger Fuckrs" rely purely on an industrial setting full of electronic beats and drums that sounds like it came from a Combichrist album, and then there are the more punk/ metal tracks with a good mix up of industrial sounds such as "Debaptisez Moi." On tracks like these the guitars tend to stick to the same chugging formation; very simple. However, punk was made to be simple, raw, and offensive. Fortunately, DK Dance tend to skip the raw part and make the production pretty tolerable. Of course, with all those industrial influences it would have to be...

Overall the music is innovative and enjoyable to listen to if one is a fan of industrial metal bands that use screaming/ shouting vocals. It isn't any NIN but sure rocks like it. It's good to see more female fronted metal out there that isn't the typical gothic/ melodic death metal type, and DK Dance do everything they can to stray from the norm and make their own sound, no matter how piercing it is.

Si vous êtes un habitué des squats, teufs, lieux autogérés, concerts sauvages et salles underground, vous connaissez sûrement le trio DK DANCE basé à Annecy (Haute-Savoie, France, Monde).

Mine de rien nos keupons inspirés aux couleurs rouge et noir de l’anarchie continuent de prêcher les (bonnes) paroles engagées pour un certain regard porté sur notre société, avec un quatrième et nouvel album/démo intitulé « Smells Like Riot ». Cet opus est à télécharger gratuitement comme leurs trois précédentes galettes, « la Violence est en Nous » (2005), « le Couloir de la Mort » (2006) et « La Décroissance » de 2008.

Save (chant), Ju (gratte et chant) et Tof aux machines persistent et signent donc avec au menu 8 titres de leur composition et une reprise de LUDWIG VON 88 intitulée « L’Abri Atomique ».

Au niveau de la musique, leur punk-électro à la BERURIER NOIR fait merveille avec toujours ce chant féminin de « riot girl » criard, dénonciateur et exacerbé, avec des riffs thrashisants pour trancher dans le vif du sujet et des machines pour les rythmes électroniques « hardtek ».

Au niveau des textes à 90% dans la langue de Gavroche, tout y passe ou presque avec la condition féminine actuelle (« Le Plafond De Verre » avec en guest Sandra de KLOSTROMA), la dictature médiatique et commerciale (« Névrologie »), le nucléaire (« les Liquidateurs » débiles de Tchernobyl), la politique somnifère (« Le Pays des Merveilles »), l’inceste « légal » (« Débaptisez-moi ») et le milieu commercial du spectacle (« Les Chaises Musicales »).

Bref en une petite demi-heure, ce punk violent souvent, énervé toujours, et haineux forcément, vous prend aux tripes, vous serre la gorge tout en vous donnant des fourmis dans le « core ». Cette envie de bouger procurée par ces beats technoïdes qui renforcent à l’extrême les propos révolutionnaires non masqués tenus par le trio. De toutes façon, rien qu’a la vue de l’artwork (réussi) de couverture vous aurez déjà tout compris à ce « Smells Like Riot » c’est vous dire !

Au final, à qui s’adresse ce petit skeud virulent ? A personne en particulier, mais à tout le monde en général car dans chacun de nous il y a quelque part un punk qui s’ignore, même sans « Iroquoise », sans piercings au nez et aux oreilles, tout se passe dans la tête et l’attitude envers une société qui veut remettre les rebelles dans le rang. Heureusement que DK DANCE et d’autres sont là pour nous réveiller, merci à eux.

"...It’s not often I get to watch a DVD recorded at a show I attended. Actually, until Hansel’s Lorentzian Lineshaper CD release DVD, I don’t think it had ever happened. When I first slid in the disc and hit play, the show was only a dim but pleasant memory in one of the industrio-tech corners of my mind. But as the introductory banter delved into Ontario traffic tickets and buried pot (with frontman Alan Fux modelling a prominent straw hat), it all started to come back to the surface. Like the album Lorentzian Lineshaper, this performance dates from 2006 – Hansel’s first live appearance on Canadian soil (or a Torontonian basement bar, if you want to be more precise). The set list delves further back, delivering a (then) eight-year-old acoustic ditty alongside tracks from 2003’s Respond_Violence and some newer material. Neither the DVD nor the show it documents are glossy high-production endeavours. But if you know either Hansel or D-Trash Records, you’ll appreciate that the (digital hardcore) rawness is part of the package. The recording captures glitches along with performance successes. An ambient conversational hum buzzes beneath the samples, live deejaying and vocals. The handheld video footage follows the musicians and also the small but interested crowd. As the lights quickly dim, the colour image shifts to surveillance grey-green. And the electric energy builds through eleven tracks to culminate in an abrupt termination that brings you back to the opening menu. "...Featuring Marc Urselli on electronics, keyboards, samples & programming and the Old Nick on vocals. THese tracks were originally recorded at Maelstrom Studio in Italy in 1999, then lost & recovered & mastered for release in 2009. Swiss-born & Italian-raised producer & sound engineer Marc Urselli has won Grammy's and done live sound for John Zorn, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson. Marc recently left us with this solo/duo project called the M.E.M.O.R.Y. Lab, recorded in Italy before Marc moved here.

Cambia (Change)" has thick, dark beat and an intense groove. Since I listen to very little IDM (intelligent dance music), I can't really compare this to anything although I do find this music to be pretty gripping. At times the distorted vocals remind me of Chrome which is indeed rather harrowing. I would imagine that those who dig the more extreme side of Mike Patton's screaming vocal projects would probably dig this. Perhaps this disc would be more appropriate on the Ipecac label, at least it would get more visibility and the proper audience. What I dig about this is the way it is produced, the sound is dense & ominous yet completely focused. All of the grooves are enticing and intense and in-your-face, kind of like those face-shredding drums machines of Big Black. I also like the way Marc stacks his samples tightly one upon another. so that certain words or phrases stand out and enhance the other. There is a great deal of righteous anger in this music and I can often relate to it while I watch the world around me sink into greed & hopeless indifference to change. D-TRASH Records wishes TERRORIZER Magazine a happy 200th issue! and thanks them for their expansive coverage of all things extreme, including the technoise scene worldwide. This issues Binary Bloodbath column, featu

red all D-TRASH releases, heres what Alex B had to say about the latest:

‘This Binary Bloodbath has been taken over by the ever prolific net label D-Trash Records. So to get the ball rolling we have DDT with ‘Syndrome of Chaos’ [6.5]. A stomping collection of industrial electronics much in the vein of early Hypnoskull. A more subdued approach is taken by RANDOM and ‘Selection’ [6] takes from the more IDM/Aphex Twin gene pool of electronic music with its weird twisted nursery rhyme tunes and glitched beats and sounds.

A more aggressive stance is taken by the rest of the recent out put from D-Trash, NO BRIGADE are full on digital hardcore, all over driven gabba beats and screamed vocals. ‘Back In Hell’ [5.5] is a furious explosion of electro-punk energy but lacks in the production. JUL!E D:STROY also have that punk fury but on ‘Lipgloss And Chaos’ [6] it’s more controlled, less anarchic, but still pretty fierce dhc.

Speedcore, grind and doomcore are the influences for THE ART OF SEPPUKU and this one man wrecking machine also takes a vast chunk of dark gabba overlord Jack Lucifer with him on ‘Muuumieeen’ [7] with some great results. THE SHIZIT don’t exist anymore and the last album that bore their name was quashed by some legal twaddle from an ex-member. So it has been re-named as The Named and this self titled slice of aggro industrial punk is as good as it gets. Hard beats, impassioned vocal

s and chunky punk/metal riffs. THE SHIZIT is dead, long live THE NAMED [8.5].

Primarily a net label, D-Trash sometimes do something a little special and this time they have released the PHALLUS UBER ALLES ‘Five Fingers Make A Fist’ Ep’s (all five of them) as a limited edition (only 25! That really is limited!) metal tin box set [8]. Each Ep contains an original track and a collection of alternate versions and remixes. PUA play some powerful digital hardcore and this box set is a glorious thing.’ -Alex Boniwell

"At the turn if the millennium, THE SHIZIT caused a stir in the underground with their fiery take on Digital Hardcore. Spouting revolutionary lyrics backed by an ear-destroying mashup of furious metal and brain-scrambling electronics, they sounded like riots on the streets. Main man JP Anderson now the force behind Rabbit Junk, has returned to [editor - project is called THE NAMED] to release eleven new blasts of noise entirely free of charge. He wants you to hear it and to share it.

This self-titled return positively seethes, boiling with the same intense fury as Gallows' Grey Britain. While this album does not have the digital assault of the band's original conception, its strongest moments come when they mix in more electronics; when 'The Shape Of Living Resistance' and Nailbomb cover 'Wasting Away' smash gigantic metal riffs, deathly roars and warping, trembling synths together, they make album highlights.

But what really surprises on this album is the lyrics. Where in the past THE SHIZIT's lyrical capacity was a little ham-fisted, it was music for clenched, raised fists, with a tendency to include "fight" as often as possible - here they open up a discomforting insight into the mind of a man not just angry at the state of the world and 'the system', but of how trapped he feels within it - "I think to myself, I just want to feel safe/Well I'm tired of looking for a prison to call home/Prison walls aren't strong enough to keep you safe" (from 'Civilisation Extermination'). What makes this all the more unsettling is how easy to relate to it is - "Does making it on your own/mean finding a boss?/Does emotional stability/mean not feeling what's been lost?/Live!" he implores us on 'The Shape Of Living Resistance'. It's a defiantly positive statement from a far from positive sound.

While more electronics would make this truly unstoppable, this more mature monster of an album is a vast improvement on its past incarnation. Sonically, this sounds like a city being levelled, but lyrically it's thinking of what could be rebuilt; a warning best delivered on menacing spoken-word piece 'Levels' : "The world I live in was constructed/ If worlds can be constructed why not make my own". These songs are the soundtracks to your frustrations and your self-depreciation, penned for anyone who feels trapped by the constraints of surviving in a modern world that hampers creativity and growth. It's the sound of vented anger at not just the world's lack of motivation and inescapable compliance with the norm, but your own. THE NAMED are no longer the sound of the revolution's bloody riots, but the reasoning behind it. Spread the word." -Rating: 4/5 by Phill May

Colourful noise - Al Conroy, aka not half, will unleash ‘improvised synthedelic madness’ at the Graffiti Gallery on July 24.

“Whenever I have a show I’m usually preparing for it in advance, so I’m multitasking right now,” says local avant and electronic music/noise pioneer Al Conroy, aka not half, as he swizzles a metal spoon — ka-klink, ka-klink — inside a colourful metal can.

A diverse range of Korg synthesizers and elektro components sizzle in the background of his studio. Minutes before, at Conroy’s bidding, the units were creating a wall of white noise. Drum machines act as noise generators, cardboard boxes as percussion.

Right now the tin can is the focus — ka-klink. “It’s time to feed the cats.”

In May, Conroy fed his electronic music, including colourful selections from Radioactive Monster Cats from Planet XLG-5, his noise series, and other tracks, to a diverse roster of fans in Toronto for the very first time. He says he gigged with “local and out-of-town performers,” such as Phallus Uber Alles “at the Hard Luck Bar on Dundas Street West.”

His independent radio chart-topping music has been described by webheads as breakcore or future jazz, but Conroy’s gifted, humorous vision is farther reaching — not to mention more colourful and more varied.

“I’m always doing stuff,” Conroy says about his future projects. “I’m going to go back to tape loops. I’ve got two reel-to-reels lined up, and I’m going to try to string tape between them, and try my hand at Frippertronics — because it’s all been done before, and I might as well do it.”

The latest joyful not half release is a full-length called C-Division on D-Trash Records, a Canadian-based online label/community.

“There’s a single-disc version of C-Division available for free download from dtrashrecords.com, and there’s a two-disc version available on DIMETRODON. You can get that directly from me at gigs, and copies will be available at Into the Music,” Conroy says.

D-Trash also put on the aforementioned Toronto gig. It was his Ontario debut so Conroy says the gig was pretty crazy. “I played stuff from my albums, from my laptop,” he says while jostling some equipment. “My (upcoming) show at the Graffiti Gallery won’t be as harsh and noisy. I’ll be playing an improvised set.”

Conroy says he’ll be primarily utilizing Korg equipment at his next gig. “Everything’s Korg actually, except the mixer, and a little keyboard. I’m using the Electribe ES1 sampler and the Electribe ER1 which is a drum machine, but I’m using it as a synth and affects unit.

“It’ll be improvised synthedelic madness — improvised synthedelia,” he laughs.

"Modern Expressing Machines of Revolutionary Youth" possesses nothing truly revolutionary or cutting edge, but that's mainly because it took over 10 years to finally surface. Canada's D-Trash Records has jumped at the opportunity to release The M.E.M.O.R.Y. Lab's first and last full-length self-titled compilation, Modern Expressing Machines of Revolutionary Youth. The long delayed amalgamation of music spanning The M.E.M.O.R.Y. Lab's catalogue of music from 1994-1999 gives us a look at their somewhat unique take on the industrial metal sound of the time...

Highlighting the talents of present day three-time Grammy award winner Marc Urselli as well as those of vocalist Nicola "the Old Nick" Curri, Modern Expressing Machines of Revolutionary Youth merely scratches the surface of what the genre holds today.

The general flow of the album is consistent, remaining confidently obscure with a hollow reverberation that loosely baits you as you listen. This hollowness is mainly attributed to the fact that the recordings were originally created through analog recording methods. Having said this, revitalization and modern remastering techniques unfortunately remain limited and the music becomes a strangely claustrophobic abundance of sound. From the menacing siren and dialogue riddled "Cambia," there is an immediate brooding attitude that unravels. It's a sound that openly screams early '90s industrial music with its almost trying-too-hard approach to dark, foreboding song making. Imagine an early Front Line Assembly or a mid-career Ministry and you will immediately hear comparable electronic/metal-infused industrial methods paralleled. The then-modern electronic injection into the metal sound comes forward in tracks such as "Another Nail into the Cross" or "To Go All the Way," offering a glimpse into the genre fusion that bands of that time were widely experimenting with. Retro sounding industrial rock tracks such as "Divine Eating" or "My Little World" ground the sound to a much more raw electric state, exposing Urselli's capabilities as an anarchistic sound engineer and musician. Offsetting this, Curri's vocal styling ranges on the disc widely from that of a haunting, anti-melodic whisper to gut-wrenching screams of angst and passion. The culmination of music that results is as much broken as it is united and creates a collection of music that comes across a bit muddled yet somehow vaguely connected. Through some clever sampling, proficient musicianship, and an oddly electric dynamism, many hidden gem moments are exposed in one shape or another on Modern Expressing Machines of Revolutionary Youth. Modern industrial music listeners should still consider an auditory walk down memory lane by way of The M.E.M.O.R.Y. Lab. Even though the group had officially disbanded over 10 years ago, it never hurts to be reminded of the bands from earlier eras that have helped to shape the modern industrial sound of today. Modern Expressing Machines of Revolutionary Youth might not ooze with pure originality, but this debut/final release from The M.E.M.O.R.Y. Lab deserves acknowledgment for illuminating the band's position in the ever developing industrial music scene.

D-TRASH Records is pleased to announce the release of "Five Fingers Make A Fist" box set, from Detroit's PHALLUS ÜBER ALLES.

Longtime advocates of feminism-fuelled digital hardcore punk sounds, the group began their struggle, in order to question "not only the cultural perception that women are somehow less capable than men, but also turns a critical eye toward the female behavior that propagates that mis-conception."

They released their furious debut "Iron Woman" on ATARI TEENAGE RIOT's Hanin Elias' pet-label FATAL RECORDINGS, later joining up with D-TRASH to release an EP of remixes of this material as well as new tracks. The band at once became a vital part of the D-TRASH roster, performing at every D-TRASH Records Fest concerts (2006, 2008, 2010) as well as providing unbelievable remixes for HANSEL, THE PHOERON and other label projects.

Last year in 2009, PÜA started releasing a series of online EPs containing more new material and remixes, a 5 part series entitled "Five Fingers Make A Fist". These albums contained more revisitations of "Iron Woman" material, their cover from D-TRASH's 2007 ATARI TEENAGE RIOT tribute, as well as a new song from upcoming release "Le Femme Terrible". To date, these EPs have netted over 10,000(!) downloads from the www.dtrashrecords.com site.

Now in 2010, PÜA and D-TRASH have taken all 5 of these scorching discs, and has packaged them in a LIMITED EDITION metal-tin box set. Asked about this jaw-dropping package, remy/PÜA said the following:

"The Five Fingers Make a Fist series is a document of the band's evolution from the first album up until now - literally years in the making. It's a "thank you" to all of the bands that have helped out and taken the time to remix us over the years, a chance to re-work old tracks and show off new ones that we've been testbombing at shows. There are plenty of remix CDs out there where all the tracks sound exactly the same. On the other hand, the remixes on our box set often sound completely different from the original, save for a vocal snippet or riff. They're more like entirely new songs, esp. in a few cases where the artists recorded their own vocals or used samples. This box set collects all 5 EPs together in one place, is CD-quality audio as opposed to compressed mp3s, and contains sticker and button designs that are not available anywhere else. That, and it looks cool. It might also be the only box set we ever do. Maybe."

D-Trash Records is a Canadian label that releases stuff from artists in the dark ambient, breakcore, EBM or any other industrial league. Apart from the official release they opt for the punkattitude and you can get their whole backcatalogue for free. No need to tell that this long list is an absolute must for anyone who is interested in music as such. One of these releases is the latest offering by German duo Mind Disruption from Aachen....

They were inspired by hardcore techno, industrial and punk. The result has become a frightening collection of harsh sounds, distorted vocals, loud beats and the kind of noises from which people will ask you if you’re still normal or not. There are times in where Mind Disruption don’t fear some EBM-cliches (but they work) and opt for the old sound by Suicide Commando or even Skinny Puppy. “Fuck yeah” (yes we admit, it’s not the most poetic thing ever) has become a more than decent release on where you can find among some fillers, some beautiful industrial pearls which are great.

Q. You recently performed in Toronto for the first time at D-Trash Fest - For our readers who aren’t familiar, what is D-Trash Fest?
A. DTrash Fest is a yearly event arranged by Jay of DTrash Records in Toronto. It’s an evening of Digital Hardcore, Breakcore, and other related kinds of music (quite alot of which end in “-core”).

Q. How do they program the acts that play at the festival? Are they all on their record label?
A. I’m not fully sure on that one. Most of the acts are on DTrash but I don’t think all of them are. Jay asks some people about playing on it and they say yes, and some others ask him about playing in T.O. and he tries to squeeze their show to happen on the DFest night. All I can certifiably say is that I asked about it last year but it was too late and then when he was putting it together, he asked if I wanted to play. I said yes, btw.

Q. What’s the relationship between the music that plays at D-Trash Fest and that featured at something like send + receive?
A. There is far more jumping up and down and unserious requests for “Freebird” all night long. The music is much louder and more dancefloor oriented, although that makes it sound like this is Top 40 dance music which it isn’t. Loads of loud kick drums and rapid-fire snares! s + r is much, much quieter and more “respectable”, if you will. People tend to sit politely and examine the sounds around them.

Q. What was the venue like?
A. Small, long rectangular box with a very low ceiling that quickly turned into a sauna when more than 8 people showed up.

Q. What were some of the standout performances you saw?
A. R%@#%$ were jumping around like crazy and going at it with gusto! They were using a tape deck! NWODTLEM had the craziest video-audio sync-up stuff I’ve ever seen, quite fun. And Phallus Uber Alles rocked the joint with their dual vocal sing along hardcore breaks. Everyone else was great too, btw.

Q. How did the audience respond to your own set?
A. A big, loud cheer, pats on the back, “That was awesome!”, “Can you come again next year?”, “Can I book you for my next breakcore show?”

Q. How did Mr. Squirrel survive with you gone for four whole days?
A. He closely examined his eyelids for holes, ignored Barb, and clung to me like a limpet soon after I got home.

The Gloomy Side Of Noisewall is the third link in the chain of musical experiments of Eraplee Noisewall Orchestra project. Seven new tracks and one remastered demo track range from massive dubstep-influenced break beat, over hard glitchy IDM, to cold and dark ambient sounds. As the album name suggests, the music shows a new side of the E.N.O. project, spreading dark and depressive atmosphere. "To make a soundtrack for a horror movie" was the main concept and the goal of the project's author Christian Mueller.

Another batch of stupidity from Winnipeg’s not half. Inspired by a fatuous review, he embraced the asinine comments and ran with them. "C-Division" isn’t thinking outside the box, it’s turning the box upside-down and hitting it to make drum sounds. It’s for all those of us who refuse to make tidy music fitting into pre-packaged boxes, for those who refuse to sound like everyone else. It is mixing laptops with ghetto blasters, synths with tapeloops, toys with instruments. Throw all genres into a blender, record the sounds and then piece them back together. Make art with paper and glue. It is but the first step of a journey into utter absurdity. You can come along if you like...

VIDEODROME is a one-night audio/visual overdose. An evening of live audio/video performances and playback by 20 local and international producers of A/V media works with a strong audio-visual link, visual music. Simultaneously video and music made from video edits, where picture matches sound, cut for cut, beat for beat, for a serendipitous sensory unity, a synesthesia with an emphasis on intensity, a semi-gemastaltkunst for the youtube generation.

The Video Battle is a competition of audio/visual media work, the A/V battle, the VIDEODROME. Developed from the idea of the hip hop DJ battle, artists will throw down fast and hard attempting to out flash each other with selections, cuts and mixes extreme, humorous and dangerous. Underlining the importance of competition as a driving force in the building of a relevant and volatile cultural community, artists compete for prizes and for glory and for the exaltation of the crowd. Winners are determined by a panel of experts and by the cheers and jeers of the audience/dance floor.

VIDEODROME is a collision of video art, mash-up, VJ culture, and experimental electronic music and contemporary club culture, bridging the gaps between the sofa, the club and the art gallery. "I’ve not listened to much digital hardcore for a while, but this album popped up as a recommendation so I thought I’d tell you about it.
It’s got the beats and energy of Atari Teenage Riot and the screaming distorted vocals of Ec8or, all put together with a ultra feminist twist, especially with tracks like “Bikini Killa”, with it’s angry verses taking a swipe at everything that is today’s idea of sexuality.
The drum breaks are harsh and roll like a bitch, while the overdriven synths and gabber kick drums pound away, ever changing, never getting boring, while occasionally feeling the nudge in the ribs of hip-hop and dubstep. Even the little 1 minute tracks have substance, whereas on many albums these could easily turn out to be fillers. The final remix track is an insane breakcore thrash through the original and is a real smack in the face after the two live tracks.
This is a dark album, and if you want to blow some cobwebs away, download this from the D-Trash Records website and put it on full blast, if you can handle it."

With a too-cute acronym standing for the unwieldy "Modern Expressing Machines of Revolutionary Youth", this possesses all the hallmarks of youthful fervour and creativity. Such enthusiasm is short lived and this is essentially their entire discography, barring one or two songs. After disbanding in 1999, vocalist Nicola Curri (a.k.a. Old Nick) worked as a visual artist while partner Marc Urselli achieved widespread acclaim as a three-time Grammy award-winning engineer.
Aggressive shouted and distorted vocals overlay a synthesis of cold electronic textures and furious metal riffs and drumming. The latter are all "borrowed" from other artists, the most recognisable being the drums from the Sepultura classic "Territory" looped on "To Go All the Way". Although the sound is fairly consistent (as it should be with a Grammy winner on board) the songs vary widely in quality and complexity, with several sounding just too repetitive. This is not as angry as the digital hardcore that defines their label, but the atmospheres are darker and more oppressive than anything spawned by Atari Teenage Riot and their offspring. Give this one a spin if you enjoyed Ministry at their creative peak. [Quentin Kalis (7.5 out of 10)]

[DTRASH140] VARIOUS ARTISTS – Distorted Mind
"I was pretty happy this morning to wake up to a message from Cat-Grrl about a new release on Canadian digital hardcore label D-Trash. Alongside her oversexed gabbafied breaks are tunes from Sydney based artists Maladroit and Mothball Z so I’m hoping for a local release party sometime soon.
Other highlights come from FFF, Microphyst, Shotgun Orcherstra and Xäcksecks. The release spans a pretty wide cross section of contemporary breakcore from tracker pop mashup to heavy drum and bass, raggacore and glitchy acid rave. D-Trash have made a promo mix of all the tracks available for free download. I’m still not sure how you go about actually buying the CD, perhaps because its such a new release the site store hasn’t been updated yet.
Though the free mix is appreciated I want the CD so I can play at least these three tunes.

Microphyst – Turbo Bastard
It’s been a while since I heard such a funky intro to a breakcore tune. Its got little rushes and edits around a big distorted half time break and plenty of space for the pads. As an intro tune this would work well in a dj set. The half time break drops in and out, competing with a steppier version of the same break, bass edits and full brock-out drums. Unlike many that try this approach the track retains cohesion and feels like a composed piece of music rather than a kid with ADD in front of a laptop.

Xäcksecks – Bust and Grind
I’d never heard of Xäcksecks before but there’s some good proper rave music here. A dense collage of vocal samples drawing from hip hop, crunk and ghetto tek are spliced coherently and feverishly, moving with the vibe of the song and not crowding the melodic or percussive elements. The drum work is heavy and varied with smooth transitions between gabba kicks, hardstyle and jungle breaks. No amazing edits but it’s all expressive and would suit a 4 am frame of mind perfectly. Bonus points for the lead.

Cat-Grrl – The Revolution Is Your Boyfriend
A couple of years ago I played a Cat-Grrl song at re:fest, i can’t remember if it was this or Grrlvert, but I remember the collective smirk on the face of the dancefloor when the samples come in and the sudden explosion of feet and arms when the kicks come in. The Revolution… has pretty solid dancefloor beats, heavy 4/4 kicks and rolling amens held together well with nice pad work and an atmospheric bassline. Write some more music please."

INTERVIEW: The M.E.M.O.R.Y. Lab D-TRASH Records Interview

One of the highlights of the 2009 year was D-TRASH Records' release of the "The M.E.M.O.R.Y. Lab" CD, DTECH08. After 2007's riotous digital hardcore tribute to scene gurus ATARI TEENAGE RIOT, this CD was an interesting change of pace music wise, music referred to by some as "aggro electro ritual industrial metal". On top of that it was partly composed (and remastered in 2009) by Grammy Award winning engineer Marc Urselli, who's rubbed elbows with people D-TRASH would never have crossed paths with, like STING? and Eric Clapton? Read below of D-TRASH's blowtorch and whips interrogation of the master of the TML laboratory:

D-TRASH: What would have the second M.E.M.O.R.Y. Lab album sounded like? Was there plans for it?
URSELLI: Interesting question. There was never a plan for it. I guess if we were to make an album today it would sound very different. Our influences of course changed throughout these years and new influences would make their way into the sound.
D-TRASH: Once you guys recorded the material that was to make up what was on the CD, what was next? Was that probably the climax of the band activity?
URSELLI: We didn't really have a specific time table. We just concerned ourselves with playing live as much as we could. After recording the CD we wanted to find a label to release it. I think I sent it around a bit but nobody was interested I guess, honestly I don't even remember. The CD was actually recorded before 1999 but I don't know exactly when... The climax of the band's activity was definitely in those last few years. We played a lot of gigs then.

D-TRASH: What was an average set list for the live version of the band - was it basically the album?
URSELLI: Yes basically. On top of that we used to play a Young Gods cover ("Skinflowers") and I think at one point we played a Joy Division cover...
D-TRASH: You would play the album in a row as it appears on the album? What song got the best feedback.
URSELLI: No, not in the same order. I guess we'd switch up the order based on the evening, but that I don't remember exactly either... I am sorry... I guess I'm getting old ;-) Different people liked different songs, but most people were just totally thrown off by what we were doing... The thing is, the alternative concert circuit of those years in Italy was rooted in the DIY punk and hard core attitude and music. Because I was part of that movement (I was a sound engineer doing live sound for many of those bands, I went around checking out live music and I had a distribution of my own) we had DIY credibility and therefore they'd let us play in these places... But audiences were so used to punk and hard core that they were all together so discombobulated by this kind of stuff they didn't really know what was happening and how to interpret it... Some loved it, some hated it... Some were put off by the lack of drums and guitars on stage while others were totally into hearing something new and unusual.

D-TRASH: Before this release, the main release of M.E.M.O.R.Y. Lab was a cassette demo, how much has this material changed from the 1990s?
URSELLI: I actually don't know cause I don't remember what was on that tape and haven't listened to it in 15 years. It was probably mostly the same because once we wrote the song it was in the sequencers and we wouldn't change it much, if at all... Of course the vocal performances would be completely different and it would be interesting to listen to that tape again now.
D-TRASH: They are? Any idea of how to track this down?
URSELLI: I think I have a copy at my parent's house in Italy, but I haven't listened to it in 15 years, it might not play or be decomposed ;-) It might need to be baked, haha... we only did about 25 of those tapes I think.

D-TRASH: There is a creative commons logo on your CD. What was behind the decision to include this? What are your feelings on piracy?
URSELLI: I think the creative commons license today makes sense. We did freely borrow as a band then and it would be absurd not to allow others to borrow from us if they wanted to. It was part of the aesthetic and the musical culture of those years in the electronic scene. It's hard to explain but if you look back you'll see plenty of examples of this in those years.
I have mixed feelings on piracy. It has ruined the music industry as we knew it, but it has also created a situation in which now an unknown band can be heard and has a shot at creating a niche market for themselves. Piracy was an answer to the majors' price structures around music, which they forced on consumers for way too long. It would have been nice to see a world with as much music as we have now but without majors imposing high prices and with people still paying for music. We'll see where this all goes when the dust settles.
D-TRASH: Do you (as a studio producer for all purposes) believe in the idea that this will solve itself out by people attending live shows? Many have said this which to me lowers the currency of the album, which I feel is more important to a band, than any live performance it may have.
URSELLI: I can only hope that live shows will resuscitate the music industry cause it's tough out there for those making music! I don't know what to say... At some point something might happen and the gears will start turning again. The big boys will figure out how to monetize music again and the revenue streams will be different one... It might not be ownership-based anymore. The problem with live music is that there are not enough outlets and venues but most importantly there is not enough interest! Think about movies. Movies keep making tons of money and even though people download them illegally just like they do with music, people keep spending more and more money to go to movie theaters. They go home after a special experience (the big screen) that can't be repeated at home. The same should be true for music. The live performance can't be repeated at home. That's why CDs sell more at shows than anywhere else! I don't understand why movie theaters don't sell the DVD of the movie that just played to ticket holders at cinemas, they would make a killing. The big difference between movies and music is that there is not nearly as many movies as there are records. There's too much offer and not enough demand for music... Maybe we are just in one of those historical dips and we just have to wait it out... People might get so fed up with the bad music out there that they stop caring about music all together. If that happens a lot of people will stop making music because nobody cares about music. Then, when we are at the all time low, there will be a resurgence of quality. People will seek it out and might even be willing to pay for it, over quantity... The demand might create the offer... Who knows... we'll just have to wait and see, it's nothing but a guessing game now.

D-TRASH: A recent review mentioned the sampling on "My Own Little World" from SEPULTURA. But I wouldn't consider your project a project that is heavy sample use of others (atleast from what my ears can tell).
URSELLI: Well there was definitely a lot of sampling going on but we never based a song around a sample. It was more like the sample was the cherry on the pie. Those were the golden years of sampling in music... You sampled to pay tribute to a band, not to steal from a band... it wasn't plagiarism (not for us at least), it was more like letting people know what your influences are and where you are coming from. It was almost like playing a cover in that way. We sampled a bunch of metal bands, especially guitar riffs since we were an industrial-metal band but we really didn't have a guitarist in the band (although sometimes I would play guitar live).
D-TRASH: What other bands are there in there sampled if you don't mind saying?
URSELLI: Actually I do mind saying. Two reasons: 1. I don't want to be sued (or D-Trash to be sued) because considering how litigious bands and their copyright owners are that would just be an admission of guilt. 2. I think it's nicer if people recognize some of those samples on their own, it's like a beautiful little discovery process, you know? Different people have recognized different things so far.

D-TRASH: There is a heavy element of members with TML going on to black(ened) metal bands like ABORYM or MALFEITOR or FUNERAL ORATION. Do you think that this was an element of what made up the band?
URSELLI: Well it was a huge influence for the old Nick (the singer) and for Fabban (who played bass with TML for a while). It wasn't a huge influence on me, I was more into power chords than I was into double drum, but Nick and Fabban were half of the Funeral Oration and I was part of that band for a year too. Fabban founded Aborym before TML and kept up with that project and still does to this day. Obviously through them it was a big influence on TML as well.

D-TRASH: How do you think that this release fits into the catalogue of a label like D-TRASH Records? Is there comparisons or contrasts that you can identify?
URSELLI: I always thought that D-Trash would be a good label for it, that's why I approached D-Trash when I recovered these recordings. There really aren't too many labels out there who release music that is a combination of electronic, industrial and metal and that is exactly what TML is. Also I like the attitude of D-Trash. It's very DIY, which is something we have always felt close to and embraced as a band and as individual members.

D-TRASH: Your music has been compared by some reviewers to that of the 80's/90's Waxtrax. Would you say that this is a fair/accurate comparison. What could you say distinguishes you from the generic "Industrial Metal!" tag.
URSELLI: I wasn't familiar with Waxtrax back then so it would not have been a conscious influence for us. I was into bands like the Young Gods, Die Krupps, Ministry, Swamp Terrorists, Nine Inch Nails and Nick was into more obscure stuff like the Legendary Pink Dots, Foetus, Christian Death and more extreme black metal stuff.
I didn't and for the most part still don't mind being tagged industrial metal. That is what we were and sound like, even though the term industrial has been abused by many bands who don't know where industrial came from and who aren't really industrial to begin with. There was a heavy component of EBM and electronic music in our sound too and what really distinguished us from most EBM or industrial metal bands was Nick's unique voice. His style is personal and draws upon all of his influences. I am glad we never settled for those boring filtered and almost spoken vocals you hear on a lot of EBM records today.

D-TRASH: You, Urselli, handled all programming and electronics for the song structures. Can you let the gear heads in on the process of recording, and then re-mastering the disc? Probably much less of it, those days, was as much as current day computer-recording techniques offer.
URSELLI: Sure. At the time my work horses were a Korg X3 (which was my sequencer and a source of many sounds), a Yamaha SY22 (which was my vector synthesis module) and an Emax II sampler (which of course handled all the samplings). All MIDI, no computers. The first two were full size 5 octave keyboards while the latter was a rack unit. The Korg and the Emax loaded their patches from floppy disks so I remember there were at least 30 second gaps between songs on stage because I had to load all the sounds and sequences. I think later I bought a SCSI hard drive for the Emax which was a big deal for me back then.
The remastering I did for the record was all digital and plug-in based. My favorite mastering plugin is the McDSP ML4000, which just sounds great and is so versatile. Its limiting and its frequency-dependent compression/expansion are key components to my mastering process anytime I do mastering for anyone. I also used some sound restoration plug ins to get rid of some crackles and some hiss from the old analog recordings. Back then we recorded everything to tape. In my studio I had a 1/2 inch 16 track Fostex G16S (one of the first Dolby S machines).

D-TRASH: I haven't had the chance to see any promotional photos, band photos, or any kind of visual representation of the band aside from the CD itself. Does the music speak for itself? In these days of photoshopped lovelies adorning the cover of your average hardcore electronic CD, looking back was there any kind of visual 'image' to The M.E.M.O.R.Y. Lab?
URSELLI: Our visual element was the presence of Nick on stage. He gave off a lot of energy and people were shocked or entranced by his performances, which were equal part theatrical, violent, disturbing and powerful. We never really took pictures of us then, which is why there are no band shots. The music does speak for itself I think. Why would anyone care about how we looked like 15 years ago. We were kids anyway ;-)

D-TRASH: The lyrics, from what I understand are a mixture of Engish and Italian? What would you say that the lyrical agenda of the project was.
URSELLI: There was really only one song in italian, which was the last song we wrote, chronologically. All other lyrics are in english. I wrote some but Nick wrote most. The ones I wrote usually were about political things, animal rights, revolting to the status quo kinda thing. Nick wrote darker and more mysterious lyrics. His lyrics were very personal and introspective at times so I never even asked. I'd let him do his thing and he'd unleash all his demons and his dark energy onto paper and onto the crowds. We were a great team.
